Radiofrequency Ablations

Radiofrequency Ablation or RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that uses targeted heat on nerves to block pain signals from irritated facet joints in the spine. They provide long-term relief for back and neck pain.

What is an RFA?

Radiofrequency Ablation or RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that uses targeted heat on nerves to block pain signals from irritated facet joints in the spine. They provide long-term relief for back and neck pain that may be caused by arthritis, injury, or degeneration.

How is the procedure performed?

An RFA typically takes 15-30 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure. It typically involves a local anesthetic to numb the skin and area as well as X-ray (fluoroscopy) guidance for needle placement. Once the needles are placed, controlled heat is delivered to the area to deactivate the nerve – reducing its ability to send pain signals to the brain and decreasing the pain sensation in the area.

Relief from the treatment often lasts 6 to 12 months, and in some cases longer. Since nerves regenerate over time, if needed, the procedure can be safely repeated every 6 months.

Benefits

  • Longer term relief compared to other injections
  • Quick recovery
  • Minimally invasive
