MILD Procedure

The MILD procedure (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression) is a minimally invasive, X-ray guided procedure that aims to treat certain cases of lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back). The procedure consists of removing small amounts of the thickened tissue that are contributing to the narrowing relieving the pressure from the affected nerves.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The MILD procedure is typically conducted in an outpatient setting and uses a small incision with local anesthesia, mild sedation, and fluoroscopy (X-ray) guidance. The procedure itself typically takes about an hour, and patients can go home the same day and return to normal activity and work a few days to a couple of weeks after. The doctor makes a small incision and inserts a small tube to gain access to the target area and then removes the target tissues using small, specialized tools.
