Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a new minimally invasive non-surgical procedure providing immediate and long-term pain relief for patients with osteoarthritis (OA), by reducing the blood flow to the lining of the knee, known as the synovium.

Is GAE right for you?

If you have tried conservative treatment options such as pain medications, knee braces, physical therapy, or steroid injections, and still have not found the relief you are looking for, you may be a good candidate for GAE. Good candidates will also have the following…

  • Between the ages of 40 and 80
  • Experience moderate to severe knee pain
  • Have a diagnosis of osteoarthritis based on x-ray, but without bony deformities/sclerosis.
  • Local knee tenderness

How is GAE performed?

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is an outpatient procedure, which allows patients to go home shortly after the procedure is complete (Typically 1-2 hours). Using moderate “twilight” sedation, our physician will insert a small catheter onto the artery supplying the lining of the knee. Tiny particles are then injected through the catheter into these arteries, reducing blood flow to the area. This reduces the amount of inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, a process that can help or eliminate the associated knee pain. While it may not treat the underlying cartilage destruction, evidence so far shows that this may be an effective way to manage symptoms with pain decreasing significantly in the first week. Relief is sustained for up to 3-4 years.
